GLF Posted July 13, 2008 Posted July 13, 2008 I was watching the LSSU fish cam for a few minutes and was suprised by the number of fish I saw that had lampreys attached to them. I grabbed these photos over the coarse of a couple minutes. Imagine how many lamprey's there must be if this is only 1 camera over the coarse of a few minutes.
GLF Posted July 13, 2008 Author Posted July 13, 2008 Here is a close up of what I believe is a lamprey.
Fishwhisperer Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 I talked to the DNR, at the South Haven launch, last weekend. He had observed less lamprey scarred fish this year.
GLF Posted July 14, 2008 Author Posted July 14, 2008 No it's not, St. Mary's River??? I thinkCorrect!Where is the Lake Superior State University Aquatic Research Laboratory Fishcam Located? The ARL Fish Cam is located in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, in the St. Marys River. The camera is positioned on the output side of the Edison Sault Electric power generation building, on the east side of the hydro plant, immediately downstream from Lake State’s ARL hatchery.. Click here for more details.
Rayman96 Posted July 14, 2008 Posted July 14, 2008 Thanks for the post, Mike. Very interesting website.
tltorrice Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 I caught a Salmon last Saturday in Manistee with a Lampray on it. It was killed.
NO MO BEGGEN Posted August 1, 2008 Posted August 1, 2008 there does seem to be less fish being cought in this area of the lake with no lamprey scars or actual lampreys attached to the fish i know the fish ive gotten with sea-mac and dirty dog havn't had any
Priority1 Posted August 2, 2008 Posted August 2, 2008 A few years back it seemed that the Lake Trout were more prone to having a lamprey hitchhikers than the salmon. Very interesting.
Adam Bomb Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 I thought the same thing Mike. I usually click on this cam once a week and there are alwasy fish that come by with lampreys. Sometimes i think its at least 3 of 10 that have them...others, barey see one.....Any way you look at it....its TOO many.
NO MO BEGGEN Posted August 4, 2008 Posted August 4, 2008 i have to retract my statement i made earlier cause when we were out with sea-mac sunday we caught a big king with about a 16" lampray on it and a smaller one with a scar on its side
Walleye Express Posted September 14, 2008 Posted September 14, 2008 (edited) There are more lampreys per live fish in the St. Marys River then in any other body of water. The sheer size and volumn of water running through this flowage From Lake Michigan to Lake Huron makes it impossible for any kind of Lampreycide treatment to be effective. The DNR have kicked around a capture and sterilization idea for years concerning this river, but for the lack of funds and personell nothing happens. So the lamprey in that system have no enimies and get a free life ride. Edited September 21, 2008 by Walleye Express
BiG ARN Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 you would think all the other fish would be eating those off them. maybe they dont like lamprey
A-Fishy-Anado Posted April 24, 2009 Posted April 24, 2009 There is another fellow yooper.....welcome aboard! This is an EXTREMELY informative site!
Boltman Posted April 25, 2009 Posted April 25, 2009 If they would feed the fingerlings in the hatcheries chopped Lamphrey..... would they eat them in the wild? It's a good question to ask when one of us is at a Htachery in the future.
Boltman Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 I go to theCAm and all Isee is bubbles, is there a better time to visit this site in order to see Fish.....
Paulywood Posted April 27, 2009 Posted April 27, 2009 In the winter they stick the camera in the sturgeon tank inside the hatchery. The tank might be empty right now. Wait a month or two, it will be back outside.
Liberty800 Posted March 24, 2012 Posted March 24, 2012 We fish the St. Mary's River system about 20 miles south of Sault Ste Marie in the shipping channel (25-30 ft of water) and I don't think we have ever seen a lamprey on a pike or walleye. They tend to prefer the salmon and trout.
