GLF Posted June 22, 2008 Posted June 22, 2008 While cleaning fish in the rain today, we noticed one of our fish had what looked like a large blood clot in the meat, about 2" in diameter. The fish did not have any external sores or bulging eyes. This fish ended up going in the garbage, because we were not sure what it was.Where would someone take a fish to get checked if they suspect VHS?
Rayman96 Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 Can't help without a photo. From what I have read about VHS, it's on the exterior of the fish. Secondly it is not harmful to humans. Was there a lamprey scar on the outside suface of the skin?

Satisfaxion_Gauranteed Posted June 23, 2008 Posted June 23, 2008 I would take a fish that I suspected of having VHS to a DNR drop station just to find out if I was right. At many cleaning stations, like in South Haven, they have a freezer to put the fin clipped heads of fish for the DNR to pick up. On occaison, a whole, bagged fish will be put in the freezer accompanied by a note describing the fish.
