schultzs Posted May 26, 2008 Posted May 26, 2008 I wonder if the DNR has a listing of where the nets are around Augres? It might be helpful to post them, just like on the west side for salmon fishermen. There have always been a few, usually outside linnwood or Standish or the east side of the bay. But not anything to bother anyone.
Priority1 Posted May 27, 2008 Posted May 27, 2008 It sure would. I wonder if the Linwood Marina, or other ports have a list and coordinates of the nets?
schultzs Posted May 27, 2008 Author Posted May 27, 2008 DNR response to my online question was that no map exists. And since there are so many nets between Augres and Linwood, I should "...maybe fish east or south of that area" !!!! Can you believe that??!!! I guess my license is not as good as the commercial guys'??I am trying to find out who posts the listing on Lk Mich side.
schultzs Posted May 27, 2008 Author Posted May 27, 2008 My question to DNR site) - 05/26/2008 07:58 PMIs there a map of commercial nets in Saginaw Bay? There seem to be more than usual, especially between Augres and Linwood.I have heard of several people having problems fishing near the nets.Response (Lynne Thoma) - 05/27/2008 02:23 PMNo map exists showing where commercial nets are set. The fishermen can legally fish about anywhere within 50 miles of their home port as long as they stay in Saginaw Bay. The area between Au Gres and Linwood typically has the highest concentration of commercial gear. There is some information in the Fishing Guide on Page 9 that may help to explain how the nets are set and help the angler avoid them. My recommendation would be to try fishing east or south of Linwood, as there may be less commercial nets down that way.Nice huh??
schultzs Posted May 27, 2008 Author Posted May 27, 2008 More from Bay City DNR office Jim Baker: no requirement for comm license to list where they fish. Would take many years/ $$$ to add that to licensing requirements. He gave me some phone numbers for law enforcement officer if some nets are causing many problems. Or if they are not marked as they should be. But basically it is "Sorry can't help you." He was very nice, but could not help. We are SOL. Keep an eye out for the flags and stay away.
