What is the difference in downrigger cables (ive noticed some are type 316,type 304 also seen type 302, all are rated at 150#)?

What type/brand would you consider the best/strongest on the market? Reason im asking is im about to purchase another sensor for a speed and temp., and i'd like to have the strongest cable out there to protect from another break and losing another sensor. Thanks,Sea-Mac.

As far as cable goes,I would stay away from off-brands. Rigger manufacturers also sell cable. You can't go wrong with one of the top brands.

Now, so that you don't lose another probe, I would suggest putting a short section of 60 or 80 lb. mono or braid between the probe and the ball.

Good luck and tight lines.

The 316 is a better grade of SS than the 302 or 304. The 316 has more nickel and chrome, and is more corrosion resistant. Watch your rigger wire for kinks and abrasions. Play it extra safe with the rigger with the probe.

TY Frank, thats what i was looking for. I did try a little bit of online research and came up with nothin. So the numbers have nothing to do with diameter or thickness of the line, just means a better grade ss that will probably last longer correct? Thanks.

YW Mike. I worked a lot with SS pipe, before I retired. Power Houses and Chemical plants use a ton of it.

It seems that any grade of SS is ok for fresh water. Even the lower grades will not rust.

The salt water users have to go with the very best SS. :)

Maybe try 200# Power Pro Spectra line?

Im not sure that stuff would work to transmit the info from my sensor thru the cable. I found some 150# coated cable. The kind cannon gives you for the speed and temp. is 135# coated cable. I used it last year with 150# non-coated cable and found it works fine if not past 80 ft. (wich i never will go much past that anyways using manual riggers). N E whoo gonna give the 150# coated cable a try and go with a snubber between ball and sensor.
