JWheeler Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 I am furious. I own 2 siberian husky's that I love dearly. As often as possible for the last 4 years I will put on my rollerblades, put on their harnesses and take them for a stroll around the block. They love to pull me and it helps to exercise them so they are not annoying around the house. Today, like usual, I am making my way around my loop and some dogs are barking. Not uncommon, while walking dogs always bark as we go by. So we go past the house where the barks came from, when I hear this big bang. I turn around to look and what do I see, 2 pit bulls charging us at full speed:eek: What the hell can I do? These dogs bear down on us, as they get closer the white one bears his teeth and goes directly for smokey's jugular. I didn't have much of a choice, I was scared for myself, so I did what I had to do to get these pits to go away. At this point, there was no one out looking for their dogs, like they didn't even know the dogs were loose. I hightail back to my house, call the cops and head back to the area where it happened. As I am making my way down the road I see the 2 pits roaming freely through the neighborhood. At this point I was tempted to run them down, I did not, but the thought crossed my mind. Went down the road a little and talked to a fella who was out raking his leaves, the first thing out of his mouth was, "what if that happened to some kids?" Good question. So the police come over and give me my options. Criminal charges or civil lawsuit. I told him I would discuss it with my wife and we would make a decision. He mentioned that he was going to go to the house and talk with the owners of the dog. Apparently the officer went to the house knocked and rang the bell with no answer. I would think maybe they were looking for the dogs, must not been looking too hard as the officer had one of the dogs in the back of his car, but couldn't get the other to come. Now the officer calls me on the phone with the sound of disgust in his voice and says, "Mr. Wheeler, don't worry about filing any suits as I am going to file a criminal charge against the owners of these dog." Now this may not be popular but is my opinion, I have never liked, and never will like pit bulls. I know that what happened today can be pinned on the owner, but for 2 dogs to charge through a door and run us down the street I thought it was too aggressive. I am OK, my dogs are Ok, Smokey has a cut on his cheek, but nothing major. I am thinking it maybe a good idea to take some kind of beatin' stick with in case something like this happens again. One thought I had is what if I had fallen down while this was happening, I would bet I would've been taking an ambulance ride to the hospital. STUPID PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
shu9265 Posted November 12, 2007 Posted November 12, 2007 You can carry a can of Pepper Spray, the kind the mail carriers use.And as far as filing suit against the owners, I would contact an attorney. Also may want to contact the city where you live, see what laws they have on the books concerning "vicious" dogs.
Priority1 Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 Jason, If you fell down you could have ended up in the morgue. There are too many incidents where pit bulls have mauled or killed kids. I was thinking about getting a concealed weapons permit just for such an occasion. I do a lot of bike riding. Most places have leash laws, but laws don't help a bit when a pit bull is on the attack.
JWheeler Posted November 13, 2007 Author Posted November 13, 2007 Frank, I did not think of any consequences with these 2 pits, I just reacted trying to ward them off. And you are right, I could've been in grave danger from these bastards. Just thankful my dogs and myself walked away with only a minor scrape. Had a conversation with my father tonight, and he was telling me about an incident he had way back when he was jogging. The bottom line is, if a dog shows aggression it can not and should not be tolerated! No one was hurt today, but what will happen next time? I believe that if they did it today, that it will only be a matter of time before it happens again.
CAC Posted November 13, 2007 Posted November 13, 2007 I have no patience with the most intelligent species on the planet who fail to understand vicious animals cannot be controlled. In my childhood neighborhood a little girls was torn to bits by a dog whose owners thought it cool to have a mean animal. Please press charges. People must be taught the lesson that these animals are not trustworthy pets.I am hugging my english setter when I get home from work tonight.Clyde
Walleye Express Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 Pitbulls don't kill people, people teach pitbulls to kill people. Do the right thing, buy a Labradour. :D
JWheeler Posted November 14, 2007 Author Posted November 14, 2007 Good lookin' pups W.E.. I have some new information from a burton detective. Turns out the fella at the house where the pits came charging out of is only watching the dogs until he can find them a new home. The dogs are his sons, who has just recently passed. Now I don't know what to do, obviously he has broken a law. He was very apologedic and offered to pay for everything. Which is great, but, the fact remains that these 2 aggressive dogs should be put down in my opinion. As far a law suit against this man, it just doesn't seem right to me. I think that I am going to go to his house and chat with him about those dog's aggressive behavior and let him know that it happened once, and was lucky no one had been hurt. If these dogs aren't put down it will only be a matter of time before it happens again and the outcome may not be so good. I will tell him that I think the right thing to do is put down the dogs.
Walleye Express Posted November 14, 2007 Posted November 14, 2007 That sound very much like the rational thing to do.
