At the height of the Cold War, the U.S. Army dumped more than 1,400 barrels of waste and an estimated 400 tons of unexploded ordinance such as grenades and ammunition into Lake Superior. More than 40 years later, state, federal and tribal agencies are still unsure exactly where they are located, what is in them and, more importantly, what risk they may pose to human health.
