By the early 1970s the double-crested cormorant had almost been extirpated from the Great Lakes. According to Environment Canada, the number of nesting pairs on the Great Lakes went from approximately 900 in the early 1950s to 125 in 1973, virtually disappearing from Lake Michigan and Lake Superior.
