zgrinder on Fin Warrior
Motored out just south of the harbor to 130 FOW, pointed the bow south and began setting lines. Initially ran 4 deep riggers, 2 SD/fly presentations, one silver blue mag spoon and one green & white large J Plug, and no dipseys. Quickly had one tip up and did not have the rod back in the water very long before boating a 5lb king on a Wonderbread SD / white fly with rattle beads. Little did we know that this would be the only presentation to catch fish other than one we dragged along for hours that bit the silver blue spoon. Decided to deploy a heavy dipsey on wire, 2 set with 250' of line out. Smart troll recorded the dipsey at 82'. Later traveling north, it recorded the dipsey at 95'. Due to the current, we only ran one dipsey on the shore side. Boated another similar king about an hour later on the same presentation while making a slow turn to head back north. We intentionally raised the ball 30' to make a 180 and not tangle the balls. About another hour went by and we hooked up with a 7-8lb king, same set-up. As we went to redeploy the rod to the rigger, the snap swivel on the rigger cable broke at the ball bearing (rusted through) sending a 15lb ball to the bottom. Also, by this time, I tangled the rigger cables on each side once (cables where between 110-135' down. One tangle damaged the coating on the Depth Raider cable that I just installed 2 days ago. Another hour went by and it was almost 9:00pm. John wanted to pull lines and get in. He asked which rod to start with and I pointed to the rod that just went tip up and said "start with this one" (Wonderbread SD / white fly - again). He played the fish brilliantly and was rewarded with a 16lb king. After that, we did pull all the other lines without another bite. # Time Fish Weight FOW Troll Wind Dir. SeaFoam
I was out last night as well. Went 2-2 both early in the evening, 6:15 and 6:45 pm. 6:15 pm: high dipsy back 200 ft, 120 FOW, green ladder back plug, 6 lb King 6:45 pm, rigger down 100 ft, 125 FOW, chrome two face SD, blue green KRW fly, 5 lb King Running only 3 lines going solo was an advantage with no tangles in the heavy current. No hits after 6:45, pulled lines at 8:45 pm. Sorry about the ball loss, Zgrinder.
zgrinder on Fin Warrior
Glad you got a few for the effort. We marked big hooks at the bottom in the water we were working but only got one to go right at the end of our trip.
