waterboy1972 Posted July 16, 2018 Posted July 16, 2018 what is a good speed for trolling for salmon in the bays in traverse city?
Mega Byte Posted July 17, 2018 Posted July 17, 2018 It depends on what you are pulling. Some baits run better slower (2.2) while others do fine around 3.0. I try to keep it around 2.5 - 2.7 mph at the ball. Speed at the ball is often different from SOG (Speed over ground, which is your surface GPS speed). Some days though, they prefer a faster or slower presentation. If you are doing turns, pay attention to if you get hits on your outside lines (which will be moving faster) or your inside lines (which will be moving slower).
justfishing1 Posted July 20, 2018 Posted July 20, 2018 I would keep it under 3 for sure. probably around 2.5 is best.

budwinn42 Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Nothing under 2.2 at the ball if you’re running primarily spoons. I’m a big fan of running fast with long leads behind spinnies, and paddles. Keeps everything pulling hard while keeping your flies, meat, etc movingly they would at 2.3-2.5. Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
Mega Byte Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 Does anyone know what the current is like in the bay? If there is not much of a current, his SOG and speed at the ball will be close enough to not worry about getting a speed probe.
budwinn42 Posted July 26, 2018 Posted July 26, 2018 .8 cm per second north which is less than .05 mph north (according to the current map). SOG should be very similar to ball speed as is usually the case in the bay. Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
