I finally got out on the big lake but realized I was trolling to fast 2.7, would I be better with a troll plate or drift socks running a 21' Cuddy with Volvo Penta 225d 280 outdrive. Thanks

2.7 SOG is not usually too fast if you are trolling for most salmon lures. Speed is all about the action of your lure when you are trolling. Diffretent lures run better at different speeds. The best way to learn is to watch the action of your lure when you put it in the water and note the speed. Sometimes less speed is better other times more speed is the ticket depending on conditions.  Once you start dialing in your speeds you can play around with bumping your speed up and down until you start getting bit.

Trolling bags are more versatile than a trolling plate, and will help "set" the boat down in the water better in any chop, but in particular in a crossing sea.

I prefer drift socks or trolling bags since they stabilize the boat better in windy/rough weather - I have 2 on my 21' Proline - but RARELY use them both...in addition - when a BIG king hits - you can throw the bags in to slow the boat significantly without changing RPM's - (especially with a newbie) land the fish - pull the bags - and you are right bag to the speed the fish hit...hope that helps!
