Spinnies/Fly of from Down Riggers

when ruining a Spinner/Fly combo behind the rigger, how far back should they be run? In the past when I tried it I only put them 6 to 10 feet back (like the dippsey set up). Also can this setup be run off Lead Core? I only get to fish 4-5 times a season so it's tough to experiment..

Hey nailer, good question. From my experieince a lot of "old timers" will tell you to only put them 5-10' behind the ball. BREAK THAT HABIT! I wont run my spinnies any closer than 20' and most times as far as 40' behind the ball. I have a 9'6" beam on my boat and I dont ever get these tangled. For example we were fishing the Oswego harbor salmon run last fall. I had 3 riggers and 2 wires going all with spinnies on them. Nothing closer than 20' behind the ball, and all the riggers were within 5' of each other. We were making some sharp turns to avoid colisions and never had a tangle once that weekend.

You can also run spinnies off of leadcore. Just remember 10 color is going to run 40-50' depending on many factors, but that spinny is going to make it ride a few feet higher.

I call Spin Doctors spinnies. Sorry for the confusion. Spin Doctors are paddles (attractors) made by Dreamweaver.

Ya I know what a spin doctor is. I run mine just about 12' behind the cannon ball. But most of the time they are on my dipsies. Now I have ran then next to my SWR rod (two color core) and do not do that, because everytime I have done that it was a tangled up mess.

I run a 3 rigger spread. My SWR usually goes down the chute. The core sinks, but the spinnies rise up. So I only need 5-8' to make sure they dont tangle up. I guess you have to learn the dos and donts when it comes to your boat.

I run 4 riggers off my boat with a 6' beam and don't have a problem tangling unless I throw sliders sometimes. I will run the spinnies up to 40' back and stagger them between spoons on the riggers and keep them at least 5 feet apart in depth. Some days when the current is bad I'll only run 2 riggers and if temp is down past 80 feet, I'll run 3 at the most.

OK, OK, I'll spill the beans. SWR (Secret Weapon Rig) is a 2-3 color core off the downrigger. Kinda like a stealthy rig. I used this rig to help me put some Kings in the boat at last years Sodus Pro Am which I ended up in 3rd place.

In charter boat talk, a spinnie is a Spin Doctor or FishCatcher. We usually always start with a 15 feet lead on the downriggers and then shorten or lengthen the leads when approriate. But, overall, 15 feet is a good starting point. We will run them as short as 5 feet or as long as 50 feet.
