budwinn42 Posted September 14, 2017 Author Posted September 14, 2017 What port you fishing Kevin? I'll be out of holland either Saturday or Sunday in my 88 crownline Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman Mobile App
2MD Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Thanks guys! And I will definitely shorten up my leads and run em deeper with the riggers. Bummer there is only about a week left to try to tag the graduating class of 2017 four year old kings!
@lastacyKevin Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 I am Holland Guy! Nice "super clean" Crownline!!
budwinn42 Posted September 14, 2017 Author Posted September 14, 2017 Thank you, I bought it this year, and the guy before me took great care of it. I'll keep my eye out for a 17 ft whaler Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman
@lastacyKevin Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Sounds good everybody! See you out there both days and keep the reports coming!!
FBD Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 I have 50' of mono over braid on my slide divers and run all of that out before snapping the diver in place on the line. Spoons also. Spinnies get about 20' leads to keep them from eating my other lines. Same leads on my riggers. Add a pair of planer boards with deep thundersticks or snap weights with spoons or J's and I can pull a mean spread off my 14'. A coupe years ago there was a guy in an old blue fin losing his mind as I had a pair of boards out like 15'. We were 5/6 that night with five hits on the boards. Next Saturday come out here's the same Blue Fin pulling two boards per side way out in the fog yelling at everyone to give him room. It was so foggy that day we skipped boards, but had a diver go off the find a nice king tangled up in our line towing a plug and a two color. Nothing like hearing people talk, hearing a drag light up on another boat, and not being able to see them.
@lastacyKevin Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 Wow! Yup I can only imagine; we will try to give everyone room Saturday. I tangled lines like that two years ago and as I was picking a spoon out of my spread....that wasn't mine I made the mistake of not knowing it was connectced to a moving boat going the other way!!! Boom! The spoon shot out of my hand and set into my thumb....one of many runs to Holland ER over the years ! Always September Combat Fishing Accidents! last trip two weeks ago, filleting salmon with a dull knife in the dark.....behind the garage...pinky still intact wife hates this time of year..... I think I have salmon down to $489.00 a pound after all ER Trips, Gas, Storage, Slip Fees... 2
Whatahoot Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 LOL! I'm with you Kevin! Although... Cost of getting out of my wife's hair for a couple of hours? Priceless!
@lastacyKevin Posted September 14, 2017 Posted September 14, 2017 You got that right! Again hope to see everybody out there Saturday Morning and hopefully we are dodging each other's fish on call! Good Luck everybody! Tight Lines, and be safe!!
@lastacyKevin Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 Tried again this evening and left Holland and worked out to 135-140 and then picked up all gear turned around and set new spreads and headed back to channel and nothing until we hit 70 FOW and the screen was loaded with fish in the 40-50 water column but still no takers....just another nice sunset and nice night with friends who begged to go out......will try Saturday Morning once again...night bite isn't happening as of late

2MD Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 Warm water and lots of weeds for me and my kids as we trolled the mud off Holland Thursday from 12noon-3pm. Only one release. Lots of kings still jumping around in there... frustrating 1
littleboat Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 I saw you in the channel as I was coming in around 12:30, you were nearing its end. Kids looked like they were still having a good time. I was wondering how the channel fishing was going? Thanks for the update.
2MD Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 yep that was us fall fishing is always FUN but certainly a lot of work - fortunately my 11year is so good at pulling and deweeding and setting riggers, dipseys, and boards because without that it would be sheer chaos between tue sailboats and kayaks and channel floor snags... I am always telling him what to do and not do but I swear I tangle things and make more mistakes than him out there!
@lastacyKevin Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 I love it when guys admit they tangle the gear up themselves!
@lastacyKevin Posted September 15, 2017 Posted September 15, 2017 Looks like the pile I created last night!! Thanks for sharing and being honest!!
2MD Posted September 16, 2017 Posted September 16, 2017 yesterday/Friday yet another and I fear our final fall fishing skunk trollin the Holland channel and pierheads for 2.5hrs - nothing like going out with a bang oh well... a pretty certain sign the season is dwindling when my son netted a 40"+ completely spawned out and dead buck off the low dock along the seawall on the far east side of Macatawa. Put the fall trolling gear away and will be looking forward to next year and while I suspect there will be less kings from planting reduction hopefully there are some REALLY big ones!
@lastacyKevin Posted September 16, 2017 Posted September 16, 2017 That is a telling picture in itself! I just came in from my final trip as well this morning ......zip, nada....not even a knock off.....
newmanstaa Posted September 16, 2017 Posted September 16, 2017 Time to switch great lakes and head to lake erie to fill freezer with walleye and perch. October is the best month of the year for both perch and walleye. Several limit trips of both on same trip. 1
budwinn42 Posted September 16, 2017 Author Posted September 16, 2017 Did you guys just troll pier heads, or did you try out deeper for 2 and 3 year old kings? Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman
@lastacyKevin Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 I did pierheads and 45-65 FOW but was getting knocked around pretty good from south blow this morning 6:30am-8am so bagged it early.....
Whatahoot Posted September 17, 2017 Posted September 17, 2017 We fished Holland Saturday 6:30-12:30. 1/1 with a 14 lb Laker and a throwback Laker. Both on DR 110 down in 125 fow, south troll. Setup in Mac, trolled out to 1/4 mile past piers, nothing but grass. Went out to 100 and reset lines, a dozen boats south towards Saugatuck in 130-140 so we trolled South until 9:30. Not even a release and radio silence so we turned around to take a break going Dow wind. Pretty rough 1-3's on the nose so we pulled the riggers for the turn and as I released 2nd rigger there was a dead heavy load on the line. Thought it was snagged on the rigger somehow... then it twitched it's head.... It may have hit it in the turn? As I released the rigger? Hell, who knows how long he may have been there?! The damn thing came up to the top in about 5 minutes and then it took another 10 minutes to get it in the boat as it's mouth was wide open. Kinda like reeling in a 5 gallon bucket! Only "hit" of the day. Better than a stick in the eye and a great day on the lake with my buddy! 1
