Shrimp for pier fishing.

I know guys use shrimp for pier fishing when targeting steelhead and salmon.  Should they be big or small?  Cooked or raw?  Fresh or sun baked and stinky?  Looking to do some pier fishing when the lake is too rough for my stomach.

Meijer 50-60 count cooked shrimp is what I've been using for steelhead.

I prefer using a fresh dead shrimp that is somewhat big so that small biters won't mess with it.
