BILLY JOE Posted November 9, 2016 Posted November 9, 2016 hello all i need to replace the reels on my wire rods want something with a good smooth drag only use them twice a year so i don't need a 500.00 reel but do not want to go cheap any suggestions thanks todd
Divemaster Posted November 10, 2016 Posted November 10, 2016 My wire reels are Shimano Tekota 600-LCs. A bit pricy, I think I got them for around $220-230 each, but well worth it for the quality.
N II Deep Posted November 11, 2016 Posted November 11, 2016 I run 4 of the Convector 30's with Bloodrun wire. going on 5 seasons now with no issues.
killerbe20 Posted November 12, 2016 Posted November 12, 2016 if you only use them twice a year a Okuma Convector will be just fine. If you want a little better reel then an Okuma Cold Water. The Shimano Tekotas are very popular and a great reel but you are looking at $60-100 for the Okumas vs over $200 for the Tekotas. I run Cold Waters on my charter boat. They are very smooth and stand up very well to day in and day out use.
fishin'magician' Posted November 21, 2016 Posted November 21, 2016 I agree with the above anglers, Okuma Fishing makes great gear for a good price. I use Coldwaters on my charter vessel and love them. I started with Convectors, which provided 10 years of flawless service. Either one will not fail you. Remember to put 10 or more feet of mono on the reels before you spool on the wire to prevent slipping.
SUPERTRAMP Posted November 22, 2016 Posted November 22, 2016 I use Okuma Convector CV30lc for my wire rigs, and after 6 years they still perform flawlessly. I have replaced drag washers, only as a preventative measure.
Copilottruman Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 Do any of you guys put 10-15' of mono in between the end of the wire and the swivel that attaches to the dipsy so you can break you rods down without worrying about the wire kinking? I don't really have the option to not break them down after each trip. Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman mobile app 1
N II Deep Posted November 23, 2016 Posted November 23, 2016 I do not. have not had any issue, just break the rod down reel up tight and leave drag just tight enough to keep it in place. 1
1HI4X Posted December 6, 2016 Posted December 6, 2016 My first preference is Tekota 700LCs. Daiwa 47LCAs have also worked really well for us. The Daiwas are now our high divers Sent from my iPhone using Great Lakes Fisherman mobile app
BILLY JOE Posted December 8, 2016 Author Posted December 8, 2016 thanks everyone if you ever need anything about the west end of lake erie let me know
ekbelt Posted December 12, 2016 Posted December 12, 2016 We run Tekota 700LCs and Tekota 600LCs. In my opinion the 700's do better.
