Navionics and fishing.

First off I am not good when it comes to technology. So here is my question. Does anyone run a tablet/iPad to run there navionics? How does it work, does it NEED Wi-Fi or can it be done with GPS? Do any tablets have GPS?

Check with Frank( Priority One) on this website, he puts together a Toughbook with chartplotter and GPS combined in an almost indestructible package. I bought one and love it . It is visible, and simple.

Well here is another twist. If I bought a iPad type device I would have to share it with my wife. Essentially the only time I get to use it is when I'm fishing.

I am not sure an Ipad is a good fit for fishing, is it waterproof? That is a big issue. PM Priority 1 and he can give you some more information.

I'm not too concerned about water proof it will be under the canopy. Plus I'd probably get a case of some sort.

I realize this post is a couple months old and you've probably already developed a solution  

For anyone else considering the same in the future:

An iPad, iPod, phone, etc. still needs wifi or cellular signal for gps. Otherwise it has no way to communicate with the satellites. You could possibly use your phone as the signal source though.

I use an iPad on the boat with the navionics app, and it works great. The only downsides I have is it is not as easy to mark locations, and if your in direct sunlight it can be hard to see. Under the hardtop it is not a problem. I have a lifeproof case for dealing moisture. As far as gps location it is not a problem, you do not need to be connected to anything to receive gps location. Majority of the time I have my iPad in airplane mode, and never lose location even under the hardtop.
