GLF Posted January 17, 2006 Posted January 17, 2006 Is there a golden rule for line size? Do you change your line size during the season? Why do you change your line size? How often do you change your old line for new line?
CaptLevi Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 A lot of folks use various sizes of line test for trolling the big lake. I run 20 lb. - 25 lb. thoughout the season and will leader down to 15 lb. in the spring for shallow / clearer water conditions usually fished then. Also the fish get larger as the season progresses so larger line is needed then. I run 30 lb. wire, and 27 lb. lead core.
Capt Craig Posted January 18, 2006 Posted January 18, 2006 Just for another perspective it depends how many rods you have. Personally I set up 8 rigger/planer rods with 20 and 4 with 40-50. The heavy line is used for pulling the large Hootchies or meat rigs 80-200 feet down and allows less stretch for better hook ups and fewer break offs. Other than that 27# core, 50# spider for divers. If you are limited on rods I would have one rod with heavy line for meat and the rest with 20# and I only change line once a year.
GLF Posted February 17, 2006 Author Posted February 17, 2006 I am curious as to what brand everyone uses. Myself, I am a Berkley Trilene kind of guy.Clear or green?
caznik Posted February 18, 2006 Posted February 18, 2006 I like to run 20# Maxima Fibre Glow for my downrigger rods. My dipseys rods I like to run Maxima 30# test.Caznik
Butch Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Pink Ande on my rigger rods, 15# or 20# depending on the season and whether I change it mid-year. On my dipseys, I have a couple with Ripcord(30#, I think:confused: ) braid and a couple with 30# Ande mono.Matt
Josh Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I like Ande, but decided that 17lb is my "sweet spot" for rigger rods and Ande doesn't make 17lb so.....I am using 17lb Trilene XT. I generally respool at the beginning of every season.
Steve Arend Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 I like 12lb Ande on my riggers and 17lb Trilene XT on my high lines and 25lb Big Game on my diver rods.
DIRTY DOG Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 20# maxima on the riggers and 30# maxima on the divers
GLF Posted May 28, 2006 Author Posted May 28, 2006 There are more fisherman on board now so I will bump this one to the top. What brand and lb test line are you using?
McFly Posted May 30, 2006 Posted May 30, 2006 20# pink Ande for all mono with various # test for other leaders and such. 50# PowerPro green for braid divers. 30# high vis PowerPro for leadcore backer.
