blacks releases

I switched to blacks releases two years ago. I love them for pulling big flashers and all types of lures for that matter. the only complaint i have with them is every year after four or five trips i start to get line twist in the line behind where i attatch the release. I usually only twist the line three to five times befor inserting it in the release. Is there something im doing wrong, or is this something everyone deals with. Any info would be great. I have considered switching to the scotty pinch pads style this year.

I would have to watch you. I use them and have not had line twist. Side note you been out of Frankfort yet and if so how was it ?

I put quite a few more twists in mine. I usually do 13. I felt when I didn't use enough the lure would slide closer to the release.

Used the Black's (actually the Dubro) style for quite a few years and never had line twist. The "twists" you make to put the line in the release would only affect that specific spot in the line -- not the longer section of line as you described. I switched to the Chamberlain release 5 years ago which uses the same twist to put the line in and have not had a line twist issue.

It has to be something else. With a fixed point to twist from at the release, I would look at the lure end. Make sure you are using quality ball bearing snap swivels that match the size of the lure you are running -- especially when using flashers. The flashers will spin some, but if you get into a current situation where the flasher is running too fast it can really put line twist in if a bad or damaged swivel is used.

I used to use Sampo snap swivels with the welded rings, but due to cost I switched to the Torpedo Diver product. Great quality on the bearings and I prefer the way the snap works. Had some of the Sampo snaps come loose but can't happen on the Torpedos.

i have been using quality swivels. Torpedo brand. I am using 20 pound suffix for line. I just cant keep the twist out. never had this problem untill i switched to blacks releases. They are the best release besides the line twist.

I fished browns a few times, but have not been out in a while because i have been fishing steelhead non stop. The first king of the year in frankfort was caught today. Brown and lake trout fishing has been ok.

Thanks for the report. It must be something with the way you are making the twist before you put it in the release.

I use the chamberlain for walleye and never have a problem with line twist. they work just like the blacks but have the 2nd adjustment for lure tension.

I wonder if you might be only doing a few twists which could be letting the pressure from the rod pull the line through the release and could introduce the twist you are seeing.

I think this might be your issue. I have always used at least nine twists for over twenty years and have never experienced line twist like you are describing.

I use thirty and twenty pound test line up at the big lake and eight pound test line on Cape Cod ponds.
