lag33 Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 How long of a leader from my fly to spin doctor is best? I've heard so many different lengths I need one to stick to, I've been running them around 28-30in so what's the best length?
Dr Hook Posted August 25, 2014 Posted August 25, 2014 I tie an overhand loop at the very end of the leader that comes with the fly, but then I pretty much only use Big Weenie flies now. You're probably going to get a bunch of responses with different lengths again. If you catch fish with that length I'd stick with it.
Line Dancin Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 For big weenies I use the entire length tie a loop in the end and good to go
tntmud Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 We also follow the 3X the flasher for a general idea but dont be afraid to experiment a little. Yesterday our best paddle was an 11" with a lead of 23" to the fly. Also our SD's set on the fast action side seem to take more fish than the slower action side, maybe just dumb luck but thats what I've noticed lately.
CornHusker Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 We have ran 3-5 foot leaders before and caught fish
Too fish Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Another rule of thumb, Negitive fish longer leads. Positive fish shorter leads. Everything in fishing is just a general starting point, cause what works for me might not work for U.
jeffsisson Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 On spin doctors (8 inch) I pretty much stick with 22 or 24 inches, On other flashers like protrol I go from 28 on 8 inch to 34 on an 11 inch. Like mentioned experiment sometimes it all changes, but this is my go to because I catch fish at these lenghts. Good Luck!
danagnello Posted August 26, 2014 Posted August 26, 2014 Yep! I've seen 3 times flasher length on flasher packages! For small flashers like Spin Doctors, etc I use 22" which should be pretty close to 3X.
