Earl Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Been fishing circle hooks the last few years, easier quicker releases---Generally. I've had a couple occasions where things have not gone as planned, and in both cases, plus a near miss, the circle hook has completed gone through the jaw (including the hook eye), and my attempted release has ended badly with the fish simply threaded on the leader. All of these have been small fish (never had it with a larger specimen, just skippers. Anyone else have this issue?
EdB Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Never had that problem with a circle hook but I've had a few with others, this one is a j plug hook.
SUPERTRAMP Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 I get one just about every spring, Early coho are feisty and I have taken several body baithooks thru the hand or finger. I have been able to push it thru, cut it off and back the rest out everytime. But Mulitple hook baits and live fish are usually a bad recipe.
IRon Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 You guys really need to quit hooking up on those fingerlings.
Rascal Trophy Fishing Posted February 21, 2014 Posted February 21, 2014 Being that I and many other fisherman want to catch and "keep the fish for the table", I haven't had any good luck with them. If they come on a lure I want, I'll usually pass, or replace the circle hook with a catching hook. Had a friend and customer put those red circle hooks on new flies some years back, the flies worked well, we all complained about the circle hooks breaking on big fish, so, he replaced them.
