DIRTY DOG Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 im woundering what you guys that run wire divers use for a reeli just purchest a couple new rods and now im lookng for a pair of quality reels for them for under 100 dollars a peice any suggjustions will help:)
minnow Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 Okuma convector 45 worked flawless this year for me.
HitMan Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 I prefer the Penn 875LC and the Shimano Tekota 600LC. One is no longer made and the other is way more than your $100 budget. Therefore, I would recommend the Okuma Convector 30D or 45D Levelwind Reels. These are the best reels for the price.
Lion Den Posted December 31, 2006 Posted December 31, 2006 I agree with Hitman on his recomendations. His suggestion is my setup exactly. I wish the Penn 875s were still available. I use the 875s for my Power Pro divers, and the Shimano 600lc for the wire. One note on the 875 is that it has a nylon line guide that I suppose will wear over time with wire, but that isn't an issue unless you can find a used one anyway. As Hitman suggest they aren't made anymore. Another option could be the Diawa gl47lc WITH a drag update. With wire, the drag is the important component. Personally ALL of my reels now have drag updates from Tuna Tom. (Ludington,MI) They are the silkiest drags available, and for under $20, you can take a lesser expensive reel and make it a very good reel. For $100, that would be my suggestion. Don't cut corners with your drag on wire.Daniel
GLF Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 I have my wire divers set up with Okuma Catalina's with line counters. The line counter on the Catalina is exclusive to Cabela's. So if you want a Catalina with a line counter, you have to purchase it from them. Oh yeah...the price tag on them last year was $99.99. I actually got mine on sale last year for $79.99. It has gone up to $139.99 this year. I knew I should have purchased more last year
CaptLevi Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 I used the Okuma Convectors with no problems. Upgraded to the Shimano Tekota 600lc's and after upgrades by the manufacturer have to say they work just fine. The Convectors actually seem to be have a smoother drag overall, but the Tekota's just feel so good in my hands.....I'm sure that there are other quality reels that would work just fine out there. Just be sure they have a smooth drag and a linecounter.
Dv8oR Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 I have 2 Convector 30d's that never missed a beat for me for 2006.GLFs Catalinas are nice!!!!My .02!
DIRTY DOG Posted January 1, 2007 Author Posted January 1, 2007 thanks ever one it looks like the convecter has the vote
SkeinMachine Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 Rumour has it Okuma is coming out with a drag upgrade for the Convectors(I own 5 of them,4 CV30's and a CV45 for copper),but the Tekota 600's for wire diver duty are just too sweet to pass up.
Billy V Posted January 1, 2007 Posted January 1, 2007 Guess I'm in the minority here...I run Daiwa Sealine SG47LCA's and love them.Bill
SEADUCKTION Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 Billy, I don't want you be feel left out, I also run the sg47lc's. I am replacing 4 of my reels with these this year. The Tekotas are too rich for my blood at this time and the 47's have never left me stranded. Good Luck and Happy New Year. Rich
Satisfaxion_Gauranteed Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 I bought two Sealines last year and also love them. I've been very happy with all of the Daiwa reels I own. I don't (yet) own any convectors for comparison. You can find the Daiwa Sealine SG47LCA for under 100 if you do a little shopping.
CaptLevi Posted January 2, 2007 Posted January 2, 2007 You know I never thought of the Daiwa's. I used to own some and thought they were great reels too! They musta been cuz some dumba** decided they were worth a prison cell when he stole em from me. (and yeah, he got caught:D )
DIRTY DOG Posted January 3, 2007 Author Posted January 3, 2007 ya diawas are good i have them as mono diver reels and allso have 4 47h,s for rigger reels
Lead_Lover Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 here is my humble opinion: "I would rather have ONE Tekota 600lc than TWO of ANY other reel!" just my thoughts...you really cant go wrong with a Tekota, you will be mad if you get a reel with another drag, especially with wire.
Catfishhoge Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 Diawa SG47LCA's are the ones I use also. I am adding two more this season!Rick
Dv8oR Posted January 4, 2007 Posted January 4, 2007 I'm still waiting on Caznik to bash the Convectors.....I don't know if he uses them for wire or not but I know Convectors/Caznik do not mix....heheheh...
