Bert's Boy Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 It was a great night for fishing despite fishing being slow. Went 2 for 2, first fish came in 155' fow 75' feet down, blue dolphin on a rigger. Second fish came on 300' of copper in 135' fow with a Silver Streak Tequila sunrise. Both fish were nice eater size Kings. I tried to bleed them out in the cooler by cutting their gills which seemed to work OK, trying to avoid having blood in the meat. Fishrmac Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 I slit the throat with a fillet knife and toss them in the live well with jugs of ice. Very little blood when I fillet them. I think the water helps to bleed them out faster rather than sitting idle in the cooler but I haven't tried a cooler yet.
Kevin Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Cut a piece of rope and tie a small loop in one endPut it through the gill and out the mouth the tie to cleat or dipsy rod holderHave it just long enough to swim in the water but not in the riggersCut gills then let it swim, the fish will pump out all the blood in the water shortlyClean meat, no mess

Fishrmac Posted June 22, 2013 Posted June 22, 2013 Wasn't sure if stringer was a good idea but i guess I'd agree with both of the above. Fish will bleed themselves and they are great to clean that way.
