Teak lumber

Any one no of where to get teak lumber in MI? Need to replace the anchor platform on the bow of my boat. Only found one supplier so far and at there prices its going to cost me near $350 just in the lumber. What other materials could I make it out of? Would like to keep it near the 2" thick range.

You may want to try starboard.

The matrial is pretty hard, mold resistant, etc.

Lot's of uses for boating and I would think much cheaper than teak.

I did think of that but from what I have seen, I wasn't sure if it would have the strength to hold an anchor and motor for a windlass. I haven't researched into that much yet but don't recall seeing any near the 2" thick range. But thanks, I will look into it more.

It looks like teak but is made from some type of recycled plastic.

The only place I know to get specialty lumber is Johnson's Workbench in Charlotte. But I would look into some kind of plastic. I'm not sure on exact thickness of starboard but I do know they make it pretty thick. You could call Wolf's in Benton Harbor, they have it in sheets and might be able to help you. Otherwise you could look into a salvage yard, might be able to find a solid teak piece there.

Try your local Menards (they can get alot of specialty lumber in, much more than they advertise).

I build custom cabinetry and when we build cabinets for an outdoor kitchen we use a product called Azek. Might be worth checking out, it's reasonably cheap.

Barn door lumber in Hemlock, Mi (just west of Saginaw on M-46) does have teak. Teak is crazy expensive. I made a bow pulpit out of laminated starboard for my old sea ray because the teak was too expensive. I believe I used the "west system" to epoxy the layers together. Starboard is a great product and works easier than wood with standard woodworking tools. I had a large danforth plow anchor and a windless also mounted on there and never had any issues. I used the old stainless guides from the original pulpit and new stainless hardware. Just be carefull not to over compress the layers together and squeeze out the epoxy before it sets. on second thought I may have just used 5200 sealant... But I definetly used stainless hardware.

Thanks everyone for the input and info. I am going to go with cumara hardwood, also known as Brazilian Teak. Much cheaper and from what research I have done just as good if not better than real Teak. Will keep ya updated on how it works out.
