Priority1 Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 I ordered some 2" Stainless Steel Tubing and some 3/16" Stainless plate that arrived today. I have some aluminum pedestals that are original to the boat 26 yo that have broken and been repaired a few times. The stress at the base of these pedestals, caused by ocean motion, and the weight of a person and leverage provided by the length of the risers, takes its toll. I know the new SS ones will hold till the cows come home. I'll also gusset the new pedestals with 3 short pieces of 7/8" SS tube that I had in the garage. This is a safety item. I'll probably add two new 2" SS rod holders off the brackets of my rocket launcher pointing slightly up and to the sides. These will be used for my outside planer boards. Ya can't have too many rod holders. I'll post some pics here after they are welded.
N II Deep Posted January 26, 2013 Posted January 26, 2013 thanks for the reminder Frank, my large Butt broke the base of my capt seat as well during heavy sea's last fall, need to get on it quickly only 2-3 months until the fun starts.
Priority1 Posted January 27, 2013 Author Posted January 27, 2013 Jon, I'm glad I woke you up. I need someone to light a fire under my butt to get me moving a lil faster. I have lots of stuff to do before Spring and I always seem to wait until after I change calendars.
Priority1 Posted March 21, 2013 Author Posted March 21, 2013 I had these ready to go for awhile and got together with my good friend Joe A. who skillfully welded these rod holders and pedestals.
N II Deep Posted March 21, 2013 Posted March 21, 2013 looks like Joe does very good work.I would look at getting them soda blasted, then clear coated.
sherman51 Posted March 22, 2013 Posted March 22, 2013 the boat should rot down around those pedestals before they brake on you. nice looking job to.sherman
Priority1 Posted March 22, 2013 Author Posted March 22, 2013 My main concern was for everyone's safety. The original aluminum ones were repaired a few times. There is a lot of stress where the riser meets the base. The wave action and leverage provided by the riser takes it's toll over the years.
