wingnut Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Considering adding a Fish Hawk X4, temperature speed probe for next year. How Important to your set up do you rate the probe.
jimbobber Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 out of 10 a 10 !!!!! i would rather fish without my graph!!!
Flyboy Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Agreed. Used it last week to find the thermocline and the temp range we needed. Found it 160 down. Never fished with a rigger that deep or with dipsys 400+ back but thats where the fish were!
coralee Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 With out it today would have been bad. Had to vary the speed at least 1.5 mph due to current down below. And as said above its nice finding temp and it can change a lot.
fishsniffer Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 out of 10 a 10 !!!!! i would rather fish without my graph!!! I would have said 11 out of 10 lost without it
kingfish123 Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 11 out of 10 don't know how to fish anymore with out it.
1mainiac Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I think for me it was the best single investment I ever made in my boat however I have not ran mine in 2 years. I suppose I should set it back up but my program is pretty much set I either find fish or I don't. I have not been skunked in going on 3 years I have had some slow days but to be honest the probe would not have changed my day much. For me it really helped me dial in on my programs but after dropping a couple of them on the bottom all I see now is 300 bucks leaving my wallet LOL.
Reel Screwd Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I purchased the x4 this year its my first probe ever, I dont know why i waited so long i absolutly love it!
pbrktrt Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I drive the boat, and trust me, it's the first rigger I want down.
King Slammin' Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Steve, I was finally able to purchase an X-4 in my third year of salmon fishing and as stated above, it was THE single most productive investment for dialing in a program and catching fish...besides the boat of course. You will not be sorry, period! [and just between you and I, it's kinda like cheatin'!]
wingnut Posted August 23, 2012 Author Posted August 23, 2012 Sounds like I'm on the right track adding the probe. Thanks for all the replies.
Spoonin Around Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 i also fish without a probe but have decided that this winter i will b buying one ... i was also aiming at the x4 does anyone have anything against that unit?
Boltman Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I'd trade the boat first, ha ha I did trade the boat and kept the fish hawk, it's simply a must....I'm out!!!!
Nailer Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I'm still old school and go without (and we get plenty of fish). I do have a Fish Hawk Td though.
KJ pluggin Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 If your time on the water is limited a probe is going to be one of the most important pieces of equipment on your boat. It will help you dial in your spread much faster and put more fish in the box.
danthebuilder Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 I'm still old school and go without (and we get plenty of fish). I do have a Fish Hawk Td though. How often do you use the TD?
WRENCHED 4 IT Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 This is my first year using one and wouldnt fish without it.
d-fresh Posted August 23, 2012 Posted August 23, 2012 We've had our probe for a few years, and we rarely use it anymore. Sure it's nice to know where the temp is at, but the fish don't really care on most days. They go where the food is at. It is nice to know the speed at the ball, but after you do it for a while, you'll be able to tell your speed based on the divers and/or rigger cables. It is a nice thing to have as a newbie, but it is definitely not needed IMO.

southtrollsouth Posted August 26, 2012 Posted August 26, 2012 I'm still old school and go without (and we get plenty of fish). I do have a Fish Hawk Td though. Taking after you now Ken..We have them, rarely look at them. Other things are far more important. When your buddy going 2mph slower than you fishing 15 degree different water than you are and he is deckloading them as fast as you are tells you that's not where the story is.
Cork Dust Posted August 29, 2012 Posted August 29, 2012 Steve' date=' I was finally able to purchase an X-4 in my third year of salmon fishing and as stated above, it was THE single most productive investment for dialing in a program and catching fish...besides the boat of course. You will not be sorry, period! [and just between you and I, it's kinda like cheatin'!']It sure does help to eliminate unproductive water quickly. By experience gained over time, you can determine best speed by downrigger cable angle and set a rod program to dissect the water column vertically with your spread and then wait and see which rods start firing consistently to dial in where the fish are. But, if you are fishing unknown water, or have not been out in a while, my probe, combined with my fish-finder gives me a quicker read on whether I need to play with lures and speed where I am, or move to potentially more productive water.
Pescadore Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 I have been using a sub troll for several years and find it very usefull. I often have guests drive while I rig and it is invaluable for an inexperienced driver. It is relatively easy for them to watch the down speed and it is much more stable than gps speed. I think it helps with the fishing program too.
picman Posted September 12, 2012 Posted September 12, 2012 The admiral was skeptical when I told her I ordered one. We averaged more fish per trip this year than any other year. Now, if I don't get the probe in first, I get yelled at: "I can't get the speed dialed in if you don't have the probe down yet!"Women!!
jimcr Posted September 13, 2012 Posted September 13, 2012 hands down , the biggest and best way to put more fish in the boat. other than dynamite.
