Flyboy Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 Can you refreeze meat strips such as the Erie Dearies? Just wondering if I don't use a whole package in a trip if I can refreeze it or not.
UBDSLO1 Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 That's a great question, I've often wondered myself. I've heard if you re-freeze without being cured, the meat turns mushy...
spoonfed Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 We refreeze ours, we run erie dearie. never had any problems with it
Gnarf Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 As far as strips go they seem to work alright refrozen, especially if cured, but dont refreeze whole herring.
anthonyyost Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 I have left extra in the freezer over the winter that had been frozen/thawed a number of times. I thought the strips looked so bad I almost threw them away, but I tried them and the fish didn't seem to mind at all.
BlueCollarOutdoors Posted August 12, 2012 Posted August 12, 2012 I had 2 hits on strips this morning that are 6 weeks old, have been thawed and frozen several times and even soaked in garlic and never brined. There are getting a little mushy but again the fish didnt care.
coralee Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Stick em in a canning jar with a handful of borax and a handful of kosher salt and they will last a long time in the fridge.
fishsniffer Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 We refreeze ours, we run erie dearie. never had any problems with itsame here with no issue
Rascal Trophy Fishing Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Interesting question and great posts guys, always good information here.
monarkbro Posted August 13, 2012 Posted August 13, 2012 Sure can do it all the time-after the second thaw though they get soft so i wouldnt recomend more than one-refreeze!
coralee Posted August 14, 2012 Posted August 14, 2012 PS-Forgot to add Fill jar with cold water, mix, and keep cold in the fridge. Meat stays nice for a long time.
