Salmon Assassin Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 I hate black flies!!! Anyone have any secrets to eradicate these annoying ba*%ards from the face of earth or to keep them out of the boat while fishing off shore.
Mushy's Dad Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 I use mosquito spray. I spray it on the boat surfaces and anything else that can take it. Just becareful not to spray lures or lines.
vielfras Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Sunscreen seems to help for an hour or two. Like Thomas said, be sure to keep it off your gear though.
SUPERTRAMP Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 I have been using a strong bleach and water spray that seems to slow them down. Gonna try that electronic deal that is advertised for hunters. Cant remember what they call it but it has to be better than the dang little critters we had to battle today/.
blahblahduchunter Posted May 20, 2012 Posted May 20, 2012 Fished Lake Erie today and they where horrible here also.

It'd be interesting to see how they would work on the flies
kingfish123 Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 I have one that I stick up by my cabin and it and amlost keeps the flies of my 21 footer. Love it.
ericjeeper Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Saturday out of Michigan City.. The flies were so thick you could not stand it.. My thermocell was fired up all day... They were honestly sitting on it.. Sunday I bought two cans of yard type foggers.. I sprayed the canopy, the carpet along the sides.. They were not near as bad.. But dang they ate my cankles up on Saturday.
steeliebob Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 We had them so bad in the UP yesterday the lake was covered with them. It sure made fishing miserable.
Fuddly Posted May 21, 2012 Posted May 21, 2012 Mix a spray bottle half and half with listerine and water. Spray it around. Works pretty good and it washes right off your hands, baits, and line if you get it on them.

Fuddly Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I've never personally done but had a lot of people I know on the big pond swear by it.
Mushy's Dad Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 I've never personally done but had a lot of people I know on the big pond swear by it. I think I will have to give it a try, but I am not going to leave the deet at home thats for sure!!
Line Dancin Posted May 22, 2012 Posted May 22, 2012 the listerine thing doesn't work. here is a link that talks about it:http://urbanlegends.about.com/od/medical/a/listerine.htm
Salmon Assassin Posted May 22, 2012 Author Posted May 22, 2012 I am prepared now. I have a bottle of original 409, bugs spray, water bottle with half viniger, yard fogger, and a can of hair spray/lighter....Either flies are going to have a massive die off or the combination of all those things is going to cause an explosion on my boat. As long as the flies die who cares....

Eliminator Posted May 24, 2012 Posted May 24, 2012 The way I have found to help the fly situation, is to increase my patience's....... this is best accomplished with a few extra beers I carry, for emergency situations of course.
Dsittser Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 Avon skin so soft. Smells a little girly but works good. Mosquitos are not fased by it though.
Salmon Assassin Posted May 26, 2012 Author Posted May 26, 2012 409 worked for the most part if sprayed and then left on a surface. I also really thought the Bugs Spray worked. They still fly around the boat but as long as they leave me alone I am good.I found it at Menards and I think it works pretty well if case anyone else is looking.http://www.buggspray.com/
MY2SONS Posted May 27, 2012 Posted May 27, 2012 I have been using a strong bleach and water spray that seems to slow them down. Gonna try that electronic deal that is advertised for hunters. Cant remember what they call it but it has to be better than the dang little critters we had to battle today/.I think the electronic gadget you're referring to is the Thermocell. I have one of these, and they work great as long as there's no wind. The unit heats up an insect repellant soaked pad, and emits "smoke" that keeps the bugs away. You can't really smell it, but it works. Problem is with any breeze it blows the repellant away making it useless.

Rascal Trophy Fishing Posted May 28, 2012 Posted May 28, 2012 Try mixing a combo. of vinegar and water, 50/50 in a spray bottle, really works, but, must reapply on hot days every 30 minutes or so to be effective. I've heard where little bo peep amonia also can be mixed with h20 with same results, but never tried it yet. Black flag flying insect spray is good to start if heavy with flies before alternatives above are activated. Shoooooooo fly!
theplumber Posted August 6, 2012 Posted August 6, 2012 the horse spray does not work and it is an oil that makes your boat a mess
