grumman184 Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 From port Sheldon how many miles offshore is it to 200 ft and 250 ft of water? I fished 200ft of water last weekend but don't have GPS. Just wondering if i should look at the offshore marine report when fishing that far out. Thanks.
ekbelt Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 I think its like 7-8 miles.Check out http://marine.geogarage.com/routesThen zoom into our area. The depth charts will load and you can use the route tool to see how far the depths are from the various ports. The route tool has two little rectangles connected with a line.
OldCool Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 That sounds about right, but because I dont have the good fortune of living 10-15 minutes from the lake (it takes me 50 minutes and $20.00 in gas). I always look at the marine forecast but I also look at this site (http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/station_page.php?station=45007).This site is the National Data Buoy Center's page for buoy #45007 which sits in the middle of the lake. This gives me the actual wind speed, wind gusts and wave height information so I don't waste a trip and $20.00.This site (http://www.ndbc.noaa.gov/maps/WestGL.shtml) has all the Western Great Lakes Recent Marine Data and you can get more accurate information on wind speed and wind gusts at many, if not most, of the major ports.Out of Port Sheldon, many of the other ports, there are folks on shore that listen to the marine radio and are willing to give updates on the weather if you ask.
Just Hook'n Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 You should look at both the off shore and in close wave forecast, wind direction, etc, etc. The inshore is 5NM, the offshore is out past that. 250ft is MUCH farther out of PS and Holland. It flattens out a great deal. I think I was 18 miles off shore and still only at 270.
Just Hook'n Posted April 12, 2012 Posted April 12, 2012 FLAT FLAT FLAT out there. I heard they were catching steelhead up top in 300fow and decided to give it a go. Dropped in 250 thinking we'd troll out to 300. 4 hours later we were in 270 and getting nowhere fast.
