chubs Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I was wounder what rods you use for lead core? I was looking at the shimano rods and i see they have a leadcore rod and a planner board rod. What is the real difference between the two? ThanksScott
Pioneer Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 For copper and core I have the okuma rods,40$ and the large guides, the shimano's have the large guides as well. Sure make feeding line out easier.
ekbelt Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 My leadcore rods are on 8'6" Daiwa Heartlands. Copper I have the 8'6" Okuma Classic Pro GLT Copper rods.
killerbe20 Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 i am not familiar with Shimano rods but my guess would be the leadcore rod my me heavier and the planner board rod my be designed more for flat line planner boards.
DarkBlue Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Shimano TDR rods work great.Yes they do.Chris
BenLubbs Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I've run both types (leadcore/copper and plannerboard) with boards and not had any problems. I currently had Shimano TDR's, Traverse Bay Tackle, and Okuma GLT copper rods on my boat. I would say that the Shimano's have the most back bone and are the funnest to fight fish on. The Traverse Bay's have the least back bone but are easy for noobies (or 10 year old brothers) to handle.
justenough Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Shimano TDR's and Okuma GLT copper rods is what we use.
BlueCollarOutdoors Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 I will give a vote for the shimano TDRs as well for leadcore, I think mine are 8 foot 6 as well. Good rod for the price. And there sensitive enough that if I use a 2 color for walleyes you can still feel the fish just fine.
jimcr Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 this is what I am using for copper and leadcore. still have a few of the wilderness rods and they seem to work just fine.
chubs Posted February 8, 2012 Author Posted February 8, 2012 Thank for the help i think i will go with the tdr rods. Has anyone had any luck with the cabelas planner board rods?
Salmon Assassin Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 I use Okuma 7' leadcore rods, bretts place on the bay had a deal on those last year. I personally prefer shorter rods. The longest rods on my boat are 8' and those are my dipsy rods. I have two 8'6" TDRs and wasn't super impressed. I however LOVE ugly sticks. I have 7' downrigger rods and you can load those puppies up. Best thing to do is try different rods until you find the ones you like. Best/Cheapest way to do that is fish with other people.
Line Dancin Posted February 8, 2012 Posted February 8, 2012 couple guys on here run the Daiwa wilderness rods. After discussing it with them and their success with them i decided i would try them. They are reg price like 20 bucks and at the shows they are like 15 bucks each. They make a great lead core rod/downrigger rod. I will be purchasing more of these rods in the near future. For copper you cant beat the okuma coper rods. They are a great rod i have 8 on my boat for my coppers and will stay with those for the money also.
