Aaron_Mcfly Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 A local gander mountain is closing and clearing out all sorts of fishing gear. A Gander Mountain roller rod got my eye and I was wondering what people had to say about them for the price paid.I am able to get 8'6" aftco roller rods for $67 a pop...What do you guys think?
Hotdog71 Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I've heard nothing but good things about them. A friend of mine said they were comparable to the Shimanos. The aftco rollers are really good, I think the shimano rods have the same kind.
mriversinco Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 I've heard good things about the rods. Haven't used them in person but for that price I think you got a really good deal.
sjk984 Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 Only downfall is theydont have gimbal butts. They roll over in the holders and tje line rides on the plastic. Really isn't an issue if you pay attentoon. My biddy uses a small bungee to keep in the holdet and upright.
DarkBlue Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 A friend of mine who runs a big boat here uses them exclusively and loves them. I've used them on his boat and I can tell you that you will like them.Chris
Yooperdad Posted February 4, 2012 Posted February 4, 2012 That's my favorite rod on the boat, and I paid $99 for mine. Go for it!
Aaron_Mcfly Posted February 5, 2012 Author Posted February 5, 2012 thanks you guys for all your input.I just got back from GM and they took more of a discount off and I ended up paying $40 for each!
Pioneer Posted February 6, 2012 Posted February 6, 2012 Thanks bud, got the last rod and gammy hooks for 1.50, buch of other stuff as well, cloths 75% off, thanks again. Chris
Aaron_Mcfly Posted February 7, 2012 Author Posted February 7, 2012 so now a question i know some one has asked...when spooling wire start off with some mono for the non slip to the arbor.now this is my question....can you get away with using braid as a filler before the wire or is that asking for problems?
Pioneer Posted February 7, 2012 Posted February 7, 2012 You could use braid but if you got some extra 20-25lb just use that, it's cheaper then braid. I don't know what you got for reels but most 30 size reels hold 1000ft of 30lb wire with alittle mono backing.
Aaron_Mcfly Posted February 26, 2012 Author Posted February 26, 2012 As far as tips for wire rods go....the gander rods don't have a swivel tip... just a roller.whats the advantage to having a swivel tip?
Pioneer Posted February 26, 2012 Posted February 26, 2012 The wire doesn't ride up on the side of the roiier and ware on the side. Always make sure the rod is pointed towards the back. Torpedo diver makes an affordable one for rods for use with hardend guides.
