What type of temp breaks do you usually look for when fishing --- are they huge or very subtle.what else besides the perfect temp for salmon do people use them

I look for 42 deg to set the bottom of my spread and run the remainder of the program up from there. Other than that, as fishshiffer mentioned, I use it mostly for down speed.

speed for me to, some days i would dropp all three riggers in to dept and we have a rigger with only temp probe and i keep like 20 feet down, I dont like the buzz that four rigger balls puts in a spread, if my speed looks slow on my riggers and divers i dropp it back down to check.

I use it more for down speed also. However we typically find where the temps drop below 60 degrees and plant the probe there. We fish everything else under that. Ever so often we will check to see where 48/49 is because we like that for big kings.

Not necessarily always a certain temp, sometime just finding a significant break is important. Sometimes they will hold on one side of the break if it is a dramatic change in a couple feet

Last year for my boat, if we had the riggers in 53-56 degree water, and a speed of 1.9 at the ball, it was lights out fast action. Mainly spoons, and caught all 5 species by doing this. I agree with the rest, speed is more of a factor than temp.

Temp is a very important factor, whether it be at the surface, or down below, keep both in mind when you factor in temps.. I esp. factor in temps. at the surface, as a 3-15 degree break on top means some mean fishing is on one side or the other of that break. The temps. down below are a secondary factor for me when this kind of surface temps. are seen and keyed in on. Beware of BOTH!

I use my probe for speed but when I find a decent break regardless of the temp I will fish the break as well as above and below. Once I find where the active fish I, I will adjust my lines according. Don't focus on having to find the coldest water, with a goofy year like that one we had the thermocline wasn't as apparent as in years past. I've taken some big rainbows 15' down in 70 degree water.

My plan is always to find fish and replicate success. I know guys that will catch a few fish on a certain lure and then swap the lure out. Personally I'll throw another one of those lures down.
