fisherdee Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Has anybody used gizzard shad for meat rigs? It is readily available for me and was wondering how it would hold up?
Fishme00 Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I dont run meat too often but I usually catch a bunch of sawbellies in the early summer on sabaki rigs and keep them for meat. I also use smelt in the smaller clip style bait heads. The smelt rigs have been deadly on big lakers.
Killin' It Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 Awifes would work better wait for them to come to the piers and get the cast net out and go out about midnight...
jerryriggin Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 try it it may work great. ive never tried it but have used smelt and lake herring i caught on drummond island
DKuiper Posted January 10, 2012 Posted January 10, 2012 I have about 30 smelt froze up in 6 packs if any one wants to try them as meat rigs. Pick them up and they are yours free.Duane
SUPERTRAMP Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 Dave said it I love to use alewives cast net after dark or we have gone out perching and found big schools in shallow water,(under 20 FOW) and thrown the cast net with a lot of success. The sabiki rigs will also work on alewives. Biggest problem is they dont work well with some of the tooth pick bait holders.
SUPERTRAMP Posted January 11, 2012 Posted January 11, 2012 If u use a cast net dont go get the biggest one u can find find the smallest and practice, Practice, Practice. Some good instructionals on the Spanish Fly website. Here is a great instructional link castnets.com/how- to- throw- a- castnet
mayvillemark Posted January 12, 2012 Posted January 12, 2012 I honestly dont see why they wouldnt work they have the same reflective scales as a herring or smelt their body is just wider but you can trim that up. They are probally fatter that herring or smelt so they should be smellier and greasier.
prop nut Posted January 13, 2012 Posted January 13, 2012 i like the thick strips just super fast easy and works good whole fresh cut may work a little better but not worth the differense to me rinse the salt off stick a tooth pick in it dribble a little herring oil on it send it out
fisherdee Posted January 13, 2012 Author Posted January 13, 2012 thanks all for your replies. i will give them ideas a try but those strips sure look easy and mess free. Can the strips be shipped, storage problems? expensive? i assume they work in the Weenie meat heads.
prop nut Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 salt packed easy to use easy to store fresh whole cut rite before you use it is the best but just too much work24 tubs of the thick strips are 135 ships usps because of the heavy salt it dont have to stay frozen some pure herring oil is recomended to use with the strips a couple drops on the strip before it goes in the water will work with any bait head it fits in the thick strips seem to last a lot longer than the thin ones that where packed in the vacume bags some of the larger bait heads it spins too fast with this you will have to slow it down a bit with some heavy hooks or some times pinning the head to the fishing line slows it down or best flip speed is 60 -120 rpm = 1-2 flips a second if it flips like a propeller blade it wont work well just like if it is not flipping at all or only once and a while sure make meat rig fishing easy with little or no mess
Priority1 Posted January 17, 2012 Posted January 17, 2012 I think the salt is as much of an attractant as the herring oil. The shelf life on these has to be real good.
