City hopes to control historic site next year

The white surface of the Fort Gratiot Lighthouse in Port Huron is spotted with red bits of brick peeking from behind the paint, serving as evidence of the 177-year-old building's deterioration.

Through the years, outer chunks of bricks forming the lighthouse's tapered, vertical exterior have broken off and fallen from the structure, which is the focal point of the six-building Fort Gratiot Light Station off Omar Street at the southern tip of Lake Huron.
