westwind Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 I have a 2002 mercury 9.9 4-stroke kicker motor on my boat. This boat is new to me this year and I'm not sure how many hours this motor has on it. I was wondering how long these motors last. What are signs that the motor is in need of rebuild, things to look for etc. The whole outboard motor thing is new to me this year, so any help would be appreciated.
danthebuilder Posted September 22, 2011 Posted September 22, 2011 Mine lasted until this season. The wood rotted on the mount & it fell in the lake. It was a 2 stroke acquired in the late 80s. Always started. Never had any issues. I wouldn't touch it until something beaks.
Nailer Posted September 23, 2011 Posted September 23, 2011 The motor should last a long time. I would recommend changing the oil and adding some stabill to the gas. I'ts not a bad idea to let it run out of gas before putting it up for the winter. This will help to keep the carb clean.
