mattmishler Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 fished meat riggs alot this year in manistee, alot of the charters we seeing there meat heads getting chomped off, were running 50lb big game, is it time to go to 60 or even 70lb. Have you seen this or has it happened to you?
mayvillemark Posted September 7, 2011 Posted September 7, 2011 I havent seen it matt I use fifty and the meat rigs I buy are tied with fifty but its leader material so its stronger and the ones I tied I dont think I could tie 60 lb but you put alot more fish in your boat though.
tltorrice Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Matt, we run meat rigs a lot and have not had any chomped off. When I re-tie them I use 50# Andie. Fished Manistee last weekend (Saturday only). Went 8 for 10. Most hits on Meat Rigs.
Nailer Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 I did have a brand new fly that was tied with 50# get chomped off this year.
mattmishler Posted September 8, 2011 Author Posted September 8, 2011 maybe i should just retie everyday then, i mean after 4-5fish on the same rig it would be gone.
Chummer Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Matt - I had a brand new meat head on 50# cleanly bite off first time in water. I was surprised to see it. None since.
Adam Bomb Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Were they leader material or just regular big game? If theyre just big game, then that could be the problem. I tied mine with Blood Run 50# Fluoro leader material and i found this stuff to be very resilient to abrasions. Granted, i dont fish as much as a charter, but had good results with mine with that line. Good luck.
JWheeler Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 I had one that broke off / bit off. I put a different head on, so now it's a modified rig, and boy, that thing is good too! Not sure the # test these come stock with.
KJ pluggin Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 I have had a few times this season when had some pretty hefty chomp marks in my fly leader, (50# Ande Fluoro). I not sure how much of the line integrity was lost but I retied prior to sending it back out, it looked to be about half way through.
mattmishler Posted September 8, 2011 Author Posted September 8, 2011 Im just keep saying were losing 51 pound kings then lol
JWheeler Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 Im just keep saying were losing 51 pound kings then lol I know what you mean Matt, I keep telling my buddy that he lost at least a couple of 30#rs lately. The ones we lose, are always the biggest
DarkBlue Posted September 8, 2011 Posted September 8, 2011 This would explain why I keep catching 51 pound kings with meat rigs in their mouths. Of course I am using 52 lb. test.Chris
Rascal Trophy Fishing Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 You big joker Matt......00oolol. Fly and Meat leaders are very important, to say the least. Check every hit! Take a charter, lol, maybe they will reveal the Secret Weapon to ya...........thanks for a good thread.
Reel Screwd Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 Im just keep saying were losing 51 pound kings then lol:thumb:Gotta be:lol:
Treblemaker Posted September 9, 2011 Posted September 9, 2011 I had 3 flies break off this year. 40# Flouro and 50# leader material used. One had 7-8 fish under it's belt but looked good, broke at the overhand knot. Cinched it off and came back with only the loop.During the big fish times maybe a titanium leader from the last teaser to the hook might give a little insurance?http://www.basspro.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/Product_10151_-1_10001_30727_151005009_151000000_151005000?hvarAID=shopping_googlebase&om_mmc=shopping_googlebase
