Help? for dipsey landing ratio...

Looking if anybody has to help landing ratio improve on braid diver rods. May be missing something, or it's just a few trips of bad luck.

Using 9' 6" TDR rods w/ 27LC reels. Braid divers w/ snubbers 8-10' leader w/ dipsey 2-2.5 setting large rings out 185-225' flasher/fly (Owner hooks). Have batted a measly 20% in the last 3 trips out, Having 18 fish come off. These fish were all hooked and turned (most fought in around 100-150') and came unbuttoned while reeling in. I'm not counting the rips.

1. Drags fairly loose. A couple of fish , the rod handler horsed..

2. Hooks new and sharp

Some times the fish will turn the hook backwards and the line becomes wedged in the treble shank. Put a drop of jb weld in there and it will stop that from happening.

Why are you using a 2.5 setting and 200' out?

Try a 1 setting and 140 out to get about the same depth.

Are you/others doing the pump and reel thing?

If so, tighten the drag a bit an do less pump and drop/reel.

As soon as the rod comes out of the holder I back the drag off and let the fish run, sometimes they will strip off 200' of wire. Then I start working it in, progressively tightening the drag until they are close then loosen up the drag a touch in case it makes a turn when it sees the boat. Patience is the key. I also just started running 2-12" snubbers behind the dipsey to give the fish a little more give, it seems to help.

here is whats working for us. set the drags tighter in the holders for a better hook set, but quickly asap loosen the drag before removing from the rod holder then let the fish run against a looser drag and dare I say it, thumb it softly till it tires, add some drag and crankem in.

That is the program we use on dipseys tight drag to help set the hooks then back down and lst the fish run do not horse the fish

I agree with everything said. I also use a snubber on my wire setups. I know some people like them and some hate them. So... It's kinda up to you. I haven't lost a fish on my dipsy in 2 years.

Thanks for all the words of experience. Many great words of experience, I like the advice of tight drag for hookset. I have been keeping it light and also letting the fish do the long run. Thinking this may be a key to so many coming off.

had the same issue last year. We lost ALOT of fish on our dipseys and we had 9 foot 6 inch rod and a 10 foot rod and we lost alot of fish. Then this year we switched our rods to short 7 foot rods and they work perfectly. We catch like 90% of the fish we have on our dipseys. Also make sure the drag is as lose as possible.

Everything your doing sounds fine to me. The 2 snubbers seems like overkill though. Im only running 20 pound test and have never had a fish break the line yet, and they really thump it hard at impact, fine by me. If there still on after the first 5 seconds they should stay on.

If they really get wild back there just loosing the drag a touch.

That's fine to do if it is a mono or braid dipsey, but there is no way in hell I'd recommend thumbing the spool on a wire dipsey. You are just asking to get your thumb cut up IMO. The drag is there for a reason, adjust it as needed.
