KJ pluggin Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 One of the things I wanted to try this year is running a 1lb ball off an inline board to help with my deep spread. One of my concerns is how to get past the divers without making a mess since the thumper rig has a steeper dive curve than my divers. I am assuming I will just have to let it slide further behind the boat before I engage the board, but if anyone has any tips or tricks that they would like to share I would appreciate it.
GLF Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 I have tried 6oz dive bombs with inline boards and they do not pull very well. Based on what I have seen with dive bombs, I do not think they will pull very well.
KJ pluggin Posted March 29, 2011 Author Posted March 29, 2011 I picked up one of the TX-44s to handle the heavier applications, I am pretty excited to see what it can do.
GLF Mobile Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 One thing you may run into is the 1lb ball may tangle with your diver rods because of the sink rate of the 1lb ball while you are letting it out.
eastcoasttransplant Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Check with one or two Shebogan and Algoma charter captains as I have been told that the cannonball weights are used off boards much more up that way into Green Bay. Most are usually very helpful in answering a question regarding spreads. Good luck.
FsnMachine Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Maybe you should try a Torpedo Diver instead. It will give you the same results but are more streamlined than a 1 LB ball and won't cause near as much drag.

Much easier on the wallet too.
mattmishler Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 it works fine. Iv done it before. I was fishing a pound ball on a full core to get down 120. Let it out SLOWLY put the bird on walk it strait back whens its 70+ft back put engage the reel and it should be fine.
Grant Sadler Posted March 29, 2011 Posted March 29, 2011 Kyle, I been running 1lb. ball 3or4 yrs now, I always run one down the schute I put on the spoon or what ever and let it out 50'-75' zero the counter and put ball on put thumb on spool and let down till it hits, depending on speed for blow back, but it's effective and get fish. Also I use the I think OR-8 release with the pin in the center of the pad, the RED one" I've never lost one yet. LOL
Pioneer Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 Kyle, I have 3 different sizes of torpedo's and a good friend of mine reaches depths of over 100' easily. He loves running them on church boards. They have alot less drag. I will keep you posted on how we do on the bank. Chris
eastcoasttransplant Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I'll be fishing the Torpedo Divers this year but not for stealth or added depth.I was having an issues on choppy days with dipsys releasing and if I tightened them up all the way, shakers were in for a long troll. The Torpedo Divers won't trip and will still get me into the strike zone. Can't wait to try them out.

eastcoasttransplant Posted March 30, 2011 Posted March 30, 2011 I fish both braid and wire.I guess I worded it wrong. It's not that we didn't see the shakers but rather the shakers would hit and not trip the diver release. So....in choppy conditions we ended up having to fight the waves, the untripped diver and then the shaker as well. I thought Torpedo Divers might help if I ran into a situation like that again.
ChampionShip Posted March 31, 2011 Posted March 31, 2011 Torpdeo Divers will get it done a little more efficiently, but there's nothing quite like a pump handle spread. Set it out slow straight out the back of the boat, the trick is to stop the line counter where you want it, then count to like 30 or so for the ball to rise into its running position, then clip on the board, let it wayyyyy back down the middle, then reel it into position in your spread of boards. Kinda tricky doing the middle of a 3 or 4 board side, but can be done if you're careful and don't turn even a degree while setting.
