HOOK N WOOD Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I'm fairly new to salmon fishing, do mostly walleye and I had a question. does anyone pull spin doctors with spoons or are they designed to just pull flies.
Killin' It Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I have heard it is possible.... I have yet to try it ...
Just Hook'n Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 You'll get a lot of comments on this post. I personally prefer flashers and flies, but there are a number of people that pull spoons behind a flasher. Personally I think spoons are designed to have a very specific action. I don't think that action is possible while getting jerked around behind a flasher (whether it's a spin doctor or another style). However, I have witnessed they catch fish, so whatever works for ya go with it.
FsnMachine Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 I have done it but can't say it has been very productive. But experience may vary with different waters clarity and temps.
Salmon Assassin Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 You could try a pulling a cut plug behind one but I think a fly is ideal.
killerbe20 Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 usually pulling a spoon behind an attractor requires a longer lead then your standard fly. That will allow the attractor to do its job while allowing the spoon to maintain its distinct action.
adrenalin Posted February 28, 2011 Posted February 28, 2011 You could probably put anything behind a flasher and catch some fish, but nothing will catch more fish than a fly. Get the lead length right and Flasher flies will be the hottest rods on your boat.

Rascal Trophy Fishing Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 How about a Michigan squid?, glow, clown, lazer, or sparkle, instead of a fly? I found a bunch of new ones I forgot about stored up under the bunk 2 years ago, found they still catch salmon pretty good yet too. As for spoons, loooong lead, 4'-6' might be the ticket once in a while.
Legacy Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 Im a flasher/fly guy all the way but we had some success pulling DW super slims behind spin doctors last year. 36" leaders of 30# test with good swivels on both ends. Gator spinny pulling a gator SS was probably our best combo but we saw a few other combos work.
joelsanders Posted March 2, 2011 Posted March 2, 2011 I saw a nice pic of a big laker taken on a spoon and spin doctor on "teamdreamweaver.com"
