Oak Park boy, 11, killed in tunnel during vacation up north; ranger says digging is never stable.

The death of 11-year-old Lloyd Andrew Kopack this week at the Grand Sable Dunes at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore underscores the hidden danger sand can pose, officials said Thursday.

Lloyd died Tuesday evening after a tunnel he was digging in the Upper Peninsula dunes on the shores of Lake Superior collapsed, burying the boy in 1 to 2 feet of sand for more than 20 minutes before rescuers could get to him. He was pronounced dead later that evening at Helen Newberry Joy Hospital.
