Hey guys I'm new to Lake Huron and wondering how the fishing has been this past year? I am from Marquette where I did a lot of laker trolling and bobbing along with the occasional trip down to Lake Michigan for kings. I am living in Alpena now. From what I can gather it looks like the salmon fishing is fairly poor on the ports near Alpena? Any chance of putting a good box of kings together out of Alpena or Presque Isle? It looks like the laker fishing is alright? I would imagine Presque Isle is better for lakers because of the close proximity to deep water or are there quite a few lakers caught out of Alpena? Walleye fishing seems to be pretty hot in the spring out of Alpena? I'm not looking for hot spot just some general guidance. Thanks in advance!

Welcome aboard Joseph. The Walleye fishing is good in Thunder bay I hear. The best Salmon fishing is on the West side of the state.

Walleye would be your best bet. It might not be as fast paced as Sag Bay but every fish we have pulled from TB has been substantially larger. Next time we get up there, Ill give ya a shout and let you know how we do.

to the north rockport or presque ile are good laker areas with occasional kings or steelhead harriseville or oscoda for lots of lakers and sometimes decent steelhead rogers city mid to late summer fishery has been improving for a mixed bag

Joseph, A warm welcome to the GLF site. Thunder bay and a lot of the inland lakes around Alpena are good for eyes. I fished with Twill out of Rockport for some decent Lake Trout in the Spring. Drop on down to the Saginaw Bay for some walleye whacking also. I live between Tawas and AuGres. It's good to have another Eastsider here.

:welcome:

Don't always think of the lakers as being a deep water fish, early in the year they are up in the water colum, same thing at the end of the season. Steelhead fishing in Thunder Bay was great this past Oct. Lake Huron for the most part anymore is a Laker fishery "IF" your looking at going out and catching a bunch of fish. The high point for salmon are the Atlantic's, early in the season out of Detour the past few years have been nothing short of great fishing for them. Drop me a line if you ever want to drag your boat up in may to sample that fishing, should be able to help you out.. :thumb:

If you want to get into the salmon good both Detour and St Ignace are good spots. Detour has the bulk of Atlantic salmon while St Ignace has more Chinook. If you get up this way send me a PM I would be more than happy to fish with you.

Wow i dont know how i missed this post.

Anyways. May is coming up and you can't pick a better spot to be during this time as far as sheer numbers of fish. Rockport is a great start soon as lake trout opens. Atlantics are rockin as well as the lake trout. Just outside of the pier head is top notch. Priority1 can confirm this. I'm not sure how big of a boat you have, but this time is great for a smaller boat. Fishing from 10-30 ft of water. Lots of lead and some drop weights. Riggers work with pretty much anything. As far as later in the year your gonna be running minimum or 10 miles out of rockport or 20 out of alpena. I've also hit walleye this time of year in the 6-10lb rang. Walleye fishing is great out of alpena. Theres prolly 3 or 4 main spots that walleye are taken. It's tough to fish more than a couple boats at the same time. In past years Alpena has developed a day time bite(which never existed in years past). Which opens up a bunch of doors for a lot of new people to get into the game.

If ya have any questions feel free to PM me.
