The sound of screaming drags is a noise I can never get tired of.
IRon Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Love spring and looking forward to it. But got a lot of work to do to the boat before then. I'm glad there's 2 or 3 months. But I love winter, too. Got a mess of bluegills in the freezer Sat., got 100+ smelt last night and went ice skating with the family yesterday. Whew, I gotta slow down.
Line Dancin Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 OK thread hijack. where and how do you catch smelt through the ice. i would love to learn that and so would my dad.
Paulywood Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 I know they do it down on Gull Lake Aaron but I always go up to Higgins. We use a submersible light under the ice at night. A Hali on the bottom and a small tear drop up higher. Those really light Ice Blue rods work great. It's a blast, one of my favorite things to do in the winter. If you head up to Higgins let me know, I'd be glad to help.
IRon Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Yes it is a lot of fun. Paulywood nailed it exactly the same way we do it. No secrets, you'll see little smelt fishing communities pop up where they're catching them.
Line Dancin Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 thanks Nick and Ron. Ron do you fish around kzoo gull lake for smelt? if so would you mind if i tagged along some time?

That sounds like a blast.
IRon Posted December 23, 2010 Posted December 23, 2010 Yes I do Aaron, and sure there's always room for more out there. I'm not sure when the next time I'll be going will be. As soon as I find out what my work schedule after Christmas is I'll let ya know. It's a good group of people out there. They're all out there for the same reason, to have fun and catch fish. Some groups will hook 2 or 3 shanties together. Took a friend of my sons out last night and he'd never gone before either. He caught just as many or more than we did. He loved it.
Adam Bomb Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 A friend of mine fishes Higgins last ice for smelt and knocks the daylights outta them. Good eats for sure!!!
Grant Sadler Posted December 24, 2010 Author Posted December 24, 2010 I'd like to tag along some time and learn that smelt thing, sounds simple and fun and I like smelt TOO.
Paulywood Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Grant, Higgins is better the later it gets but you can usually catch them all winter. I'll let you know when I head up there. It won't be too often this winter as my wife is pregnant.
Killin' It Posted December 24, 2010 Posted December 24, 2010 Caught a nice colored up steel today.....I am JONESED more then ever now;)
