A-Fishy-Anado Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Sorry if this has already been covered, but i had not heard about this story yetGenetically engineered salmon
Priority1 Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Brom, I saw that on the 6:00 PM news tonight.
JWheeler Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 I also saw that this was going to be on the news, missed it, but that article is a good read. Here are the concerns that peaked my curiousity most. If there is a chance that it could happen, I think it is likely that it will:They also worry that the fish will escape and intermingle with the wild salmon population, which is already endangered. They would grow fast and consume more food to the detriment of the conventional wild salmon, the critics fearThe company has several safeguards in place to quell concerns. The fish would be bred female and sterile, though a small percentage might be able to breed. They would be bred in confined pools where the potential for escape would be low. Low, to me means that it is possible. Just like the asian carp flooding out of farmers ponds and now scaring the crap out of great lakes anglers....
Boltman Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 i AGREE We need to leave mother nature alone, when we interfere nothing good comes from it,except stocking fisheries... and even then I'm sure there are issues that we don't know yet...
anthonyyost Posted September 21, 2010 Posted September 21, 2010 Yeah, look what happened on Jurrassic Park when they engineered the Dinosaurs to be female!
A-Fishy-Anado Posted September 21, 2010 Author Posted September 21, 2010 Agreed guys....sounds like a potentially bad idea to me.Murphy said it best....."Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong"
jimcr Posted September 22, 2010 Posted September 22, 2010 ok so engineer Salmon, what are they going to eat. The waters can only support more fish if there is enough of a food source for them to eat. Then we must engineer plankton and plant more forage fish for the salmon to eat. by the time there done we might as re-engineer our selfs.remove the pollutants from the water , cool off our world then things might improve. bad idea to say the least. We have to stop poisoning our selfs!!!!
