Deep Descent Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I would like to know how far I should make the leader lengths behind the diver when running spoons, and flasher and Flys. I run 4ft leaders now for spoons but I am just getting into running the flasher and flys. Any input would be great.
spoonfed Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 with spoons we run 6 to 8ft leads. flashers we are anywhere from 18 in to 8 ft
Paulywood Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I try to run them as long as possible without making it impossible to net the fish. Usually have the dipsey touching the rod tip and the hook on the lure at the butt of the rod.
Nailer Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 Once we went to 8'+ Our diver/flasher/fly have been on fire.
plumkrazy Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 hook diver to rod reel diver to top of rod and tie leader todiver and cut at the but of rod
Hotdog71 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 I have 7' rods that I run my dipsies on. One rod has a 6' leader and the other has a 10' leader. Some days, one rod takes more than the other and other days they are about the same. The 10' is a little harder to land the fish, so we just walk towards the front of the boat.
killerbe20 Posted August 1, 2010 Posted August 1, 2010 the length of my out stretched arms. I think that is supposed to be close to a persons height which would make it about 5'8''. This is also where the term fathom came from, so just for fun, my diver lead lengths are one fathom long.
BlueCollarOutdoors Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 As long as possible, i got 9 feet on spoons and 6 on flasher flys. It makes a difference.
1mainiac Posted August 2, 2010 Posted August 2, 2010 There are several variables but generally I run longer leads on clean spoons 6 to 8 ft and tend to shorten up my flasher fly setups. I usually run 3 to 4ft leaders between the snubber and flasher. My reasoning is based on what a friend of mine told me several years ago when he talked me into not running meat rigs. That a diver is by no means a stealth presentation and if we pick our divers based on color to attract the fish make sure the lure is close to it. Speed and a few other things also play into it such as size and type of flasher Spin Doctors for instance for me work better on longer leads. The 11in Pro Troll paddles seem to like 6 ft leads as well but for the 8in Pro Troll's I like 4ft or less. Another reason for me liking shorter leads is it helps keep my gear from finding my other gear.
