Hotdog71 Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Headed out from the pier heads to 100fow. As I made my way out I noticed a pack of boats north of the piers around 120fow trolling in a circle. Decided it was NASCAR for boats- they kept making left turns! Not wanting to get dizzy, we set lines and trolled ssw. Didn't have all the lines in when a laker hit a green dolphin spoon 70 down 110 fow. Just finished getting lines out and the dipsy 150 back with no see um fly goes with a nice king in 117 fow. Later our meat rig pops, fish gives a couple nice jerks and it's gone . Still trolling through 117 fow and downrigger with greeh dolphin goes again. As I get to the rod the 300 copper with wrecked em fly starts screaming. We landed both fish, both kings. Had one more hit on copper in 110 fow but, for the third time this year, the leader broke . I had switched all my lead, copper and dipsy leaders to 30# flourocarbon. 2 flasher fly combos and a spoon gone on fish that were smaller than the ones we landed. I'm switching everything back to big game. Still a good night on the lake. Keep um' tight!
Just Hook'n Posted July 20, 2010 Posted July 20, 2010 Fluoro works great, but you REALLy have to watch for weak spots. If you REALLY don't want break off, go with some Ande mono. I have my riggers strung with it and I've had finsh wrap around my wire divers and the downrigger cable and not break off the line (knock on wood).
Far Beyond Driven Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 Check all your core leaders, diver leaders, and the last 50' of your rigger rods before every trip.Sounds like paranoia, and my barn cats don't walk near the boat for fear of getting gill netted in all the cut up line that piles up over the course of a season. The last fish I broke off was last summer in a tournament on a fly leader I didn't check. I think I have to go two years back from that for the next break off.
SUPERTRAMP Posted July 21, 2010 Posted July 21, 2010 I have lost some flies and some plugs using 20# fluoro carbon leader, just picked up some 40# gonna give it a try. Funny I agree that I never had the problem when I was using 30# Big game.
