I think that you can get a decent fixed mount and antennae for less than what a top of the line handheld costs. I have $150 into my radio/antennae and have up to a 20 mile range. I have never seen a handheld that could match that.

I bought a raymarine unit for $100 shipped to my door. Check out Bethel Marine Electronics out of FL. They are usually running some kind of specials.

Doesn't look like they are on special anymore, but it might be worth a call. Mention something about the RM 49 that was on special for $95 and maybe they'll talk turkey with you. It's a real nice unit. It can hook right up to your GPS and has all sorts of functions that I don't even know how to use yet. Good luck
