I found a 2007 Starcraft Superfisherman 1800 with a 115 mec 4 stroke , used 5 times , absolutely showroom condition , I have until tomarrorw to buy if for $15,500 , comes with 4 stroke 5 hp kicker , LCX 28HD color FF , 6 Persuit Rod holders , and 70# 24v Minn Kota trolling motor......I am concerned about the 115 , seems too small , does anybody have a simular boat ???will the 115 get it up on plane and I believe this is a great deal ....what are your thoughts ?????

The Superfisherman is a great all-around boat. It sounds like a very nice price. I would think the 115 would have no troubles with that boat. Can you test drive it?

Posted

no ...he will not let me take it out , said he is afraid something might happen to it and then I won't want it ....sounds like he is hiding something

Sounds like a nice boat. I have a 115 on my Proline 19ft, I think it weighs more than the Starcraft, and it moves well. 4 guys, with calm conditions, I can run about 30-35 mph, full speed.

Dont ever buy a boat with out a water test. A load on a motor totaly changes the dynamics of the engine and gears. I know from experiance.

Buyer be ware

If you really like it tell him you agree to buy it as long as everything checks out on the water test. I agree with Steve, I wouldn't buy anything where they specifically won't let you test it on the water.

i had a superfisherman 176 with a 2 stroke 90 merc and it ran about 34 mph with a full tank of gas all my salmon gear and crew.i would think that 115 would move you along just fine.starcraft makes a good boat,i am fishing out of a 07 fishmaster now:thumb:

My 18ft Starcraft is a tank and runs 27 with 4 fat guys and all the gear with a old 80hp Merc, a 115 on a 18 aluminum hull has got to be close to max hp on the hull. It might not beat a bass boat but on flat water it will fly I would guess mid 30's to 40 mph

Oh yea and pass without a water test.

the owner dropped it off at the boat shop , the owner of the boat said that the boat will run 35-40 mph , but the boat shop owner refuses to let me take it out or talk to the owner of the boat ....It is in prestine shape but I hate to pass it up , without running it I am going to have to pass it up , what has me skeptical is the max motor rating is 200hp and there is only a 115 on it

Posted

115 hp motor on a boat rated for 200 is a matter of economics. It's a huge price difference between the two motors.

4 strokes are generally heavier and weight becomes a concern.

Currently most manufactures of boats, whether glass or aluminum, state a hp rating and a maximum transom weight.

The boat shop owner should be able to take you out on the water.

With such a short time deadline and no water test, I would be very wary. Question is what are they hiding??? Whatever it is you would be on the hook for it.

At the very least they should provide a survey!!!!!

Without one, I would walk away!!!

thanks for all the responses ......I am going to pass , i might regret it but at least I will still have $15, 500 for something that I am not skeptical of ....

MY 69 starcraft holiday 19 ft has a 69 85h johnson on it altho its rated for a 15oh and fully loaded we can run 3o if calm and around 25 to 28 in 3 foot waves. AS for buying without testing, no way can you afford to gamble 15,ooo .

I told the guy without a test run I didn't want it ....he told not to come back .....and I won't , I would rather diive 500 miles than go 15 miles to his shop .......thank you guys for saving me a headach and the loss of $15,500.00.......I am looking for a midsized Starcraft , Tracker , Crestliner or Monarch boat , But if I wait I will find another deal , My Tracker Super Guide had done me well for 8 years , whats another couple months .....thanks again ....Mark

Buying used is always buyer beware. In this case the dealer even sounded very sketchy.

Great forum with wealth of information.

My first boat turned into a nightmare because I didn't know as much as I thought I did. Things looked fine after the water test but went sour before the end of the first season.

Something is very wrong with all this. I think you'll be really happy you ran far away from it.

My boat - third owner - they guy got me in contact with his buddies in the marina, the first owner, the shop that did all the service, handed me a folder with the original receipt and every bit of labor ever done on the boat. Let me run it 3-4 times as soon as the ice was out with a couple different people that had the same model (we had a hold check in escrow). I didn't get a survey but I didn't think I needed to, and that was 950 hours ago.

Sounds like a nice boat. That's just what I want when the time is right. Something just doesn't seem right with them refusing a water test. Keep looking and you can probably find the same boat down the road and feel comfortable buying it too.

Somethings doesn't sound right, at the very least the Boat shop owner should take you out in it . Would you buy a used car without driving it ??

Pull the registion number off the boat, you should be able to find the owner with it

if a boatshop/dealer will not let you take it out, something isn't adding up. Never known of a dealer who wouldn't take a potential customer out for a test drive on a used boat or talk to the owner.

just my opinion

I have a 115 2 stroke on my Tracker Targa V17 not as heavy motor as the 4 stroke little better on the hole shot. The Targa is not a light boat when fully loaded with gear and fishermen but does do 40 ,even with a full tank of fuel and 1 full live well. This is a deep boat and wide at 101" . I,m not sure how deep the starcraft is but you should be at least close to what the boat is rated for. Sounds to me like the boat is under powered if its rated for a 150.

I bought the Targa instead of the proguide 175 because the length was shorter on the trailer and longer overall , would have went to the 18 but it wouldn't fit in my garage. rigging with rod holders was an adventure because the rail is curved so I added a angle of aluminum and a support which is not in the picture. I have 4 riggers on it and 12 rod holders, added a Marine radio. I bought the boat at the winter boat show, got a pretty sweet deal. I know have almost 150 hours one it and really enjoy it. If you buy one get one with a Full windshield , I would never buy one with out again. The new models this year are 101" wide . I kind of kid around and say she has a fat ass. But the ride is great along with the room coming from a 16ft with a 68" beam.

BIL has the 196 Fishmaster with a 115 4 stroke merc. And IMO it's a little doggy. Needs a little more motor in my eyes. If I were buying another boat and the seller was not going to allow me to take it for a ride and test it out, I would move on.
