County takes samples to pinpoint contamination source

NEW BALTIMORE -- On a sunny summer afternoon, it's hard to think of the Walter and Mary Burke Park on Lake St. Clair as a trouble spot.

But this beach traditionally is among the worst in Macomb County for bacterial contamination. Since 2000, New Baltimore's small beach has been shut down 172 days due to high E. coli readings.

What's behind the annual spikes is a mystery to local and county health officials. But they are teaming up this summer for some CSI-like detective work to find out where the contamination is coming from.
