Great Lakes to pay price for quick fix

Every month I read Salt Water Sportsman and Florida Sportsman, two of the best angling magazines anywhere, to keep up with what's happening in the Gulf Coast and Florida waters that were my haunts from childhood through an adulthood stint as the outdoors writer at the Miami Herald.

Since moving back to Michigan 16 years ago, I have watched from a distance, and sampled at least annually, a Florida saltwater fishery that has roared back from the nadir of the 1980s.

It was Florida that started the recovery ball rolling 16 years ago when a 10-year battle by anglers, led by Florida Sportsman, pressured the legislature to outlaw commercial netting in inshore waters
