GLF Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 A friend of mine needs to change his water pump on the motor on his boat. It is a 4.3l v-6. Is there a difference between a marine and an automotive waterpump?
pbrktrt Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Mike, I'm pretty positive they are different. Napa has a marine catalog that they will give you & you could order from that. They get their parts from Sierra Marine so that's another option. I guess it boils down to how fast he wants it & what he wants to pay. Good luck.
GLF Posted May 26, 2010 Author Posted May 26, 2010 One of the things were are concerned with is the RPM's. The boat is turning 4000-4600 rpm's while running. A truck only turns 1800-2500 RPM's while driving, unless under exceleration.
trucktramp Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 Speed of the pump would likely be determined by the driven pulley size. From what I understand (which may not be much) some of the marine engines are not automotive based. My mercruiser is in that catagory. Otherwise, I would think that a pump is a pump as long as the bolt patterns and snout lengths are the same.Good Luck
Just Hook'n Posted May 26, 2010 Posted May 26, 2010 What I typically do is get the part number from Yacht Basin in Holland. Then I run the "cross reference" software at Parts Plus or Advanced Auto. Sometimes it works (like stators, wires, stuff like that) othertimes the parts are specific, like carbs alternators, etc.
