water speed ?

I have my new hds 5 on the boat. It didn't come with the wheel for water speed and i was told lowrance is discontinuing it. Is it necessary? do you use it much? or do you guys usually just use the GPS speed? which is better to use?

gps and down speed are all that matters none of the speed wheels are very accurate. In 1 to 3 ft waves my old unit read up to 2 mph when anchored just from the waves passing under us.

GPS is the way to go, SOG, water wheel isn't that accurate..

They are going the way of the nickel beer. GPS SOG is the best indicator of boat speed.
