flyman013 Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 My wife got me a new trolling combo for Valentine's day this year (yeah, she's great). I just spooled it up and noticed the little plastic inner ring was missing from the tip, so it is just a metal ring. Do you guys think it will be Ok for trolling if I'm using straight 20 Lb. monofilament? If not, do you have any suggestions on a fix? And like always, we lost the receipt, so no return. Here is a picture of what I'm talking about. Thanks for any advice!
mattmishler Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 I would replace it. We had one do it on a rigger rod and there was the smallest knick in the metal and you could feel where the mono was rubbing.. The way i look at its a 2$ replacement and save you 20-30 dollars in the end. jmo
fishsniffer Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 i wouldnt use it...i would suggest putting a twilli tip on it..probably not practical if youre using it as a rigger rod..but i definatly wouldnt use it like that.
Sea-Mac Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 I also recommend putting a new tip on. Very easy and inexpensive to do. You could also try checking with the manufacturer to see if they have replacement rings available.I use super glue around every eyelet on every rod to help keep them from falling out.
Priority1 Posted February 26, 2010 Posted February 26, 2010 If the rod is new, why not take it back? Replacing a tip is no big deal.
willfishforfood Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Replacing the tip is easy. You can heat the tiptop with a lighter and it will pull right off.Do not over heat the tip. Most tackle shops have replacement and glue it back on with 5 min Epoxy and your good to go. If you can't find a tip PM me.
GLF Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Hey Peter.....D & R Sports has replacement tips. Bring the rod with you and make sure you get the correct one.
2UNREEL Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Had the same problem last year, didn't realize the new rod had a cracked ring and when the mono payed out I saw a fuzzy string coming off my line. Lucky I reeled it in without a fish cause my mono became 2. Replacement tip and 5 min and I was good to go, buy a couple and bring some spares fishing with you. Fishsniffer knows a thing or 2 about broken tips on a fishing trip

Hotdog71 Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 Replace the tip. Worth the time and effort.
Hoosier_Steelheader Posted February 27, 2010 Posted February 27, 2010 I had a Penn Fathom Master that the tip eye broke with a fish out 100yards behind the boat. It was about the 3rd time we had used it, I emailed and called Penn, they sent me a new top half no problem at all.The fish was harder to land than getting the rod replaced.
